Why don’t I like fruit?

June 15, 2011 § 2 Comments

Sometimes I wonder if it’s that ‘eating by your blood-type’ thing.  Maybe people with my blood type don’t like sweet things.  I don’t know.  But I don’t really like fruit.  Or sweets in general.  I hesitate to say this… but I don’t even really like chocolate.  {except for brownies and PW’s chocolate sheet cake}.

I’m one of those salty, sour, savory cravers.

There is one fruit, however, that I do love.

Day 7. 30 Day Photography Challenge. Fruit

It’s not so much that I love the taste of watermelon.  It’s the fact that the taste conjures up memories.  Of summer.  In Alpine.  With my family.  On the 4th of July.

Plus, it’s fun to have seed spitting contests with your cousins.  Or it was.

It has to be straight out of a cooler filled with ice and water.  It’s the only way.

PS.  Wait.  I just remembered.  I DO love fruit.  Duh.  avocados are a fruit.

Bricks don’t work

June 15, 2011 § 1 Comment

Since she was little, people have always commented on how tall she is.  And I would say in a sing-song-kinda way, ‘ I know… we’re gonna have to put a brick on her head.’

Day 6. 30 Day Photography Challenge. Low angle.

Of course this angle is exaggerated… but I do have to look up to her{physically}now.  Who am I kidding?  I look up to her period.  In fact, I hold her up on a pedestal.  Anyone that knows me, knows that.

And yet, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard,… ‘Just wait ’til she’s a teenager.’

Well.  She IS a teenager.  And she’s still just as wonderful.

I ‘hear’ what my well~meaning friends and family are saying.  I just don’t receive it.

And I certainly don’t take credit for what a beautiful young lady she is.  She came here that way.  And I thank God everyday for being so blessed to be her mother.

All A's, Baby!!

Here she is at the 7th grade awards ceremony.  She made all A’s.  She was awarded ‘Outstanding Athlete’.  Yep.  She rocks.  And I hold her on a pedestal… or did I already tell you that?

Just so you know, bricks don’t work.  Look at this girl.

Hi Baby!

June 7, 2011 § 5 Comments

It’s not hard to shoot a picture of baby girl from a high angle.  That is pretty much my angle on her most of the time.  It is a bit challenging to get a picture of her standing still.  She is really on the go.  As it should be.  I pray that she is who she is meant to be.  I pray that she is shaped by her experiences.  Not necessarily defined by them.

Day 5. 30 Day Photography Challenge. From a high angle.

I climbed up on top of my pickup to take this shot.  She didn’t like it one bit.  In fact, she was kind~of throwing a miniature fit.  That’s when she headed off away from me.  So this was the best I could do.  I like it though.  It’s just like her.

I am so thankful for this baby.  What a precious gift she is.

I may continue to take pictures of her from this angle… because I know I’m gonna blink my eyes and she’s gonna be a big girl.  Time is flying by.

Love Big, Mj

Bloom. Where You are Planted.

June 7, 2011 § 4 Comments

About 4 weeks ago I dug a little hole in the grass in (what used to be) our goat pen and threw in some zucchini squash seeds.  Then I forgot about it.  Since the goats are climbing the mountains at the ranch now the very best luscious grass in our back yard is in the goat pen.  And it’s tall grass.  Guess the goats did a good job of fertilizing the pen.

On Saturday I fired up the weedeater and went to work.  First order of business was to clear a path to the chicken coop.  I don’t relish the idea of stepping on a snake.  I’d probably have a heart attack on the spot.  Next on the list was cleaning up the goat pen.  You know I wouldn’t have to weedeat if the goats were still here.  But they are in paradise.  It’s cool.  So I’m weedeating… grass is flying… sweat dripping… and… wait.  What’s this?  Holy Cow!  That’s one gigantic weed.  No.  Wait.  That’s not a weed.

Day 4. 30 Day Photography Challenge. Something Green.

That’s SQUASH!  It’s kind of a miracle.  I suppose that zucchini squash is a hardy type of vegetable.  It certainly didn’t get any TLC from me.

The whole squash~flourishing~by~itself thing is a metaphor in my eyes.  You know. “Bloom where you are planted.”…Mary Engelbreit.  I try to do that on a daily basis.  Bloom.  Where I’m planted.  Flourish in the present.

Just so you know.  I did what any self-respecting cowgirl gardener would do.  I weedeated around it and trimmed the grass growing in it, too.  I’m thinking about getting a hoe out and doing it right.  We’ll see.  Wouldn’t want to ‘squash’ its independence.

Clouds and a {potential} Rain Dance

June 7, 2011 § 1 Comment

Folks from west Texas pay attention to clouds.  We have to.  They bring rain after all.

The Big Bend area has been without any significant rain for 10 months.  And we’ve had range fires to prove it.  I honestly can’t remember it ever being this dry.

It doesn’t usually rain a lot until July and August.  So, we are all holding out hope that the clouds will come.  And the rain.

Day 3. 30 Day photography challenge. Clouds.

I waited an entire cloudless day to take this picture.  Just pitiful little puff of clouds not anywhere close.  And this isn’t west Texas.  It’s in the city.  We need rain in the city, too.

“A pessimist sees only the dark side of the clouds, and mopes; a philosopher sees both sides, and shrugs;
an optimist doesn’t see the clouds at all – he’s walking on them.
Leonard Louis Levinson”

Clouds at the Davidson by J

I would much rather see these kinds of clouds.  This was taken by my husband last fall.  I have this picture as the screen saver on my cell phone.  I love it.  Makes me think of this:

A cloud does not know why it moves in just such a direction and at such a speed, it feels an impulsion… .this is the place to go now. But the sky knows the reason and the patterns behind all clouds, and you will know, too, when you lift yourself high enough to see beyond horizons.”
Richard Bach

Grumpy{my grandfather} called the clouds that bring big rain thunderheads.  I have no idea if that’s a technical term or a Grumpy~ism.  Either way, I love thunderheads.  There is nothing like rain in the mountains!  I thought you might like to see a ‘real’, ‘big’ cloud… west Texas Style.

A Glass Mountain Sunset by Tanner Quigg

Tanner is an amazing young photographer.  You can find his website here.   {He just did a wedding photo shoot for a friend of ours at the Davidson… in the boulders… in high heels and a wedding dress.  Can’t wait to see them!}

And I would be remiss if I forgot to mention my FIRST fav west Texas photographer, Michelle, of Lost on the Horizon Photography.  I seriously admired this photo… and she had it printed for me.  Hope you enjoy.

Lost on the Horizon. In west Texas.

Today I’m sending out extra love and prayers to all of the Big Bend area.  Lord, please send the rain.  If it would help, maybe we can all get together and do a rain dance.  I’m not above putting a feather in my hair{it’s the ‘thing’ right now, anyway} for effect.  And so I’ll close with an Indian blessing.

You see, I had been riding with the storm clouds, and had come to earth as rain, and it was drought that I had killed with the power that the Six Grandfathers gave me.

And PUSHed I will be

June 3, 2011 § 2 Comments

Day Two of the 30 Day Photography Challenge brings me to ‘What I Wore Today’.  I actually stressed about what I was going to wear today… for about 5 seconds.  Then I threw on my usual HealthQuest polo, shorts and tennies.  We’ve got concrete floors here, people.  And I’m a chiropractor.  So, I’m sorta particular about my feet being comfortable.

The best thing I wore today is this.

Day 2. 'What I wore today'

PUSH means ‘pray until something happens’.  I’m glad I wore this today.  I needed a reminder.  I’m going to be pushed.  We all are.  I guess the question is… will we allow it to make us stronger?  I say yes.

Do Something for 30 days…

June 2, 2011 § 2 Comments

…and it becomes a habit, right?  I’ve been meaning to get started on a blog for Redhouse Ranch for, oh, a day or two.  And so, here I am.  Thought we might spend some time getting to know one another.  I’m literally PUSHing myself to do a 30 Day Photography Challenge.  You will all witness a miracle if I make it through on schedule.  I’m not much of a habitual person.  It will definitely be a challenge… to work it in, to get in front of the camera, to share my heart.  I’m {kinda} excited.

Found this fun~ness via Pinterest from here (if you would like an invite to Pinterest, email me… it’s ah-Mazing).  Join me {and my bud, Michelle} on this challenge.

I’ll be back soon.  This is {gonna be}fun.

❤ Big, Mj
